Why I am no longer "The Type THREE Woman"

Firstly,
I must give credit where support and credit is due. I leaned on two specific friends (J and A) during this time who were a wonderful listening ear as well as a strength to me during this time. They know who they are and I love them for their willingness to just be present in my life during this time. It was an act they didn't have to do. They're perfect examples of selfless love.
Thank you ladies. You are beautiful, inside and out.

Since May 31, 2014 I have changed my name from The Type 3 Woman, to just the generic The Type Woman.

And it appears like people care to know more about my reasoning for that than anything else I have to write.

Why is that, I wonder?
Probably because there's a whole community of people who love Dressing Your Truth, as well as Carol Tuttle and her team and so why would someone like me, who avidly loves the system so much, just seem to walk away from it all and talk no more about it?

I'm certain it looked like I left everyone in that community, without caring to say goodbye to some awesome friends I've met along the way, when the fact is that I felt forced to leave it.

I read Carol's book, "It's Just My Nature" a couple years ago and it justified everything that I hid within that was "wrong" with me and had me understanding that it was all "right". Here I was struggling with my identity, with who I really am, with what I wanted God to want me to be as my sense of self was a mess while I pressed myself to conform to a lifestyle and a personality that frankly makes me gag when I look back on it.

I was strangely happy and found it was most "natural" to be the type of person that I convinced myself my whole life as "wicked", "evil", and "crude". And to me, all three of those negative words meant one thing: that God would be disappointed in me if I dare continue to let that persona out.

Carol's book did not fall into my hands, by my amazing friend Rebecca, by mere chance.
Looking back I see God's hand in His finding the perfect time for me to read her book, so that I, Ladee, may know of a surety that God made me as ME and not to be someone else, especially a person that tradition said I should be.

And here I saw an opportunity too, to have fun with his new understanding of who I was. I literally took it, embraced it and ran with it! And that's when I started making a blog, youtube, facebook, instagram and google plus account.
I was reaching out to all I could find who, too, loved this system. I wanted to talk all day to everyone about the different Types.

And so I posted away!

I thought nothing of it and thoroughly enjoyed being The Type 3 Woman when I posted something, late February, that I shouldn't.
I posted one of the Types color card and within that blog post, also talked about a coloring system. Both of which to many, don't correlate, but to me, it does most of the time.
I then got a message on facebook, from a very kind woman, who helped me understand my wrongdoing as well as linked me to Dressing Your Truth's Terms of Use.

I took down the post and out of respect for a system that I love, I decided I would be more careful in the future.

But something didn't sit right with me.

These Terms of Use were a "Membership Program Agreement".

I never paid for any program and I did not buy Carol's book from her website. I bought it used online, an old print. So old the pages fell out.
I wasn't a member.

I decided to put it behind me until a few months later. When I got another message.

Dated May 26, 2014

Dear Madam,

Some of my material has been published without my consent on your Facebook and YouTube pages.

(...)

Carol Tuttle

Also in this message I am told I have until May 31, 2014 to change my accounts.  To take out "Type 3" as my label.

All in five days.

I was a mess of emotions.
Here I thought I was helping the DYT team. I was bringing people to their fold, making certain that those that came on my blog/youtube/facebook/instagram knew that I wasn't affiliated with their team, and neither that I was a professional.

So I changed everything and claimed myself "The Type Woman". It was basic. It was generic. For all anyone knew, I could very well be talking about different blood types before they assumed I was referring to a "type" of personality. And if I was talking about personality "types", one would assume I was talking about the MBTI Types that are used when applying for jobs before I was talking about any other system.

And then I got this, May 31, 2014:

Subject: TheTypeWoman.com

TheTypeWoman.com
Dear Ladee Lyon,

Thank you for your attention and efforts to be in compliance and remove the copyrighted material from your videos, sites, blogs, posts, and Instagram and other social media sites where you are promoting yourself. The term Type cannot be used in your site links or any promotion of yourself or others as it is specific to Carol Tuttle's Dressing Your Truth, Energy Profiling, and Beauty Profiling copyrighted work and intellectual property. To complete the compliance request this will need to be corrected by the end of the day with the other compliance requests for May 31, 2014.

Thank you for your prompt and immediate attention to this matter. We are grateful for your support and attention to honoring Carol Tuttle's copyrighted work.

Sincerely,
Dressing Your Truth

And I again had a near meltdown.
I considered how to change everything, again, and if I even had the TIME to do so.
I didn't want to cause any problems! I didn't want to get into any trouble.
So should I spend the whole day changing everything, again? To keep the peace?

But then I noticed something. The subject line of this message says, "TheTypeWoman.com". I had no website with that! I only had my blogger account. It was so strange that such an important detail, in my opinion, was overlooked that I decided to click on the links of those who actually SENT these facebook and youtube messages, claiming themselves as "Carol Tuttle" and "Dressing Your Truth".

And I thought you'd like to click on them too.
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=686125647
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWwhLs2EjaIiKm3-IihG2fg

Who, in heaven's name, are these people with these accounts?

One answer is, "Well, they could be Carol Tuttle's 'people'."

Sure, maybe.
But I sure found it weird.
I decided I wasn't going to labor over changing my accounts...again. They were just fine as they were.

And then someone posted this, May 29, 2014:

The link has long been removed and will pull up a 404 code but another requirement was for this blog assistant was to be familiar with youtube and wordpress.
Something that I indeed AM.

And that was it.
That was the final straw.

I felt like even if I were to apply for this job, I would get shut down. I felt like they wanted me to apply so that they could shut me down.

By this time I felt like Carol Tuttle and her team were nothing but a bunch of bullies. Friends of mine were leaving DYT groups because moderators were micro-managing and dropping people from the group. Carol Tuttle herself was telling people they were in the wrong DYT group, leaving these women confused, hurt, and berated....something the system, I so firmly believed, did the absolute opposite.
I was also one, of many, who had to change their name/title due to some fancy written message that scared us into doing it as it was never anywhere close to our intention to do anything wrong, but show the world how wonderful this system is.

All in all, they wanted nothing to do with me and wanted me to be far from their system. To no longer claim them again.

So, I didn't. Feeling battered and left in the dust their tires kicked up after dumping me off, I removed the "3" from my name.

I then took a large dose of what all I had left: time.
I kept telling close friends who knew about this that I wasn't going to post anything about this on my blog as "I don't want to give DYT any satisfaction that they controlled me".

But yesterday I decided to go against that.

This week I found something.
Forgiveness.
A few days ago I was talking to my friend about the Types (something I have been doing for a while now) and suddenly found myself shedding the scales of bitterness and rejection I felt towards Carol Tuttle and her team. While I don't understand why and what had me shedding these negative emotions now, instead of sooner, or rather instead of later, but I realized a weight that had been present on my shoulders were removed. While the sting is still there, I feel the sting is no longer directed to Carol, her team, or to any person.

I am liberated.

I still am unsure as to how I am going to move forward when it comes to talking about The Four Types System, especially Dressing Your Truth.

Time will tell.

And there you have it, the answer to the question you all have been asking.

  2. You are awesome and honest...and let me just say here that Jane Segerstrom began the type system and wrote 2 books in the early 80's on the subject. Thanks Ladee!

  3. Whoa, after these past few months of educating myself on this subject, I am continued to be shocked by the petty and childish behavior of some of the followers.

Sorry you had to deal with this "type" of situation. xx

    1. Carol Tuttle as far as I know, is not a licensed cosmetologist and has no experience behind the chair, cutting, coloring, or chemically processing hair.
Therefore she should not be giving professional hair advice to anyone, as all knowing (what looks best on women).

She has no experience on a daily basis of working with clients hair and women’s particular wants, needs, feelings etc. with their hair.

For Carol Tuttle to be giving professional advice to a woman on her hair is a great disservice to them. To actually tell someone to chop off their hair and that they will be true to their energy and feel great is absolutely obsurd.

I as a licensed professional hair stylist, having over 10 years experience behind the chair, know that most woman now days are very particular and practical about their hair. I always consult my clients on what they are comfortable with , lifestyle, maintenance and affordability when it comes to their hair.

Carol Tuttle may be able to give ‘advice’ about energy, and face profiling, and what ‘might or might’ not look good fashion wise but even then I would hesitate as her credentials in the fashion world are extremely slim.

I’m pretty sure she didn’t go to design school or any kind of fashion classes. So to charge people money for her fashion advice seems obsurd to me.

As far as personality goes, I’m pretty sure she’s not a licensed psychologist and has no training on that either. So again to asses people’s personalities through their facial features is probably just made up. No proof or enough study’s to support that either.

As far as energy profiling and energy work, I do think there is something to the idea. Yet again where are her credentials for energy profiling the face and body?? What’s the evidence to support these teachings. How can she possibly charge people for these things??

Bottom line, I think this women has taken her ‘fashion suggestions’ to an all time extreme and has totally overstepped her boundaries in an ethical sense!!

  5. If you were to look at DYT's history, where they took I mean got their information you would realize that DYT is the proverbial pot calling the kettle black. Won't say more but they get what they put out. I abhor bullies and thieves.

  6. Thanks for posting this. I know it takes courage to stand up to DYT. Did you consult with a lawyer about whether they had any true legal basis for their threats? Also, I find their aggressive techniques perplexing. Don't they understand that with the huge amount of publicly available material on their website (not mention their on line store) any reasonably intelligent person could easily figure out the basic rules of each of the types? It is pretty obvious.

But what I really want to express is my admiration for how you have let go of the anger over this. I am trying to learn to let go of some anger in my life and you are a great example.

  7. Dressing Your Truth is a very interesting concept. I found this book - and read it, about 3 years ago. It has kept my head spinning - as to exactly which of the 4 types I really am.

This has been a very interesting journey. I love Carol's work for this reason, because I was an image consultant for a number of years trained in the Color Me Beautiful system - back in 1988. That system didn't address the fact that your personality could be contrary to the colors that you were told - were your BEST Colors - and SEASON.

Carol's system addresses this issue - and does so in a way where you can still decide exactly which of the 4 types you truly are.

However, I can't help but admit - I feel LOST at times, because I'm not really a perfect Type 1, 2, 3, or 4. Just as with my decorating... I'm very eclectic. This system is restrictive in a number of ways. It doesn't really "fit" some people, because a lot of us just simply like to dress the way we like - and not be restricted to a "Type" - at ALL!!!

Another friend explains this - as "I wake up in the morning, go to my closet - and my mood determines how I will dress that day. I'm happiest when I honor how I feel in the moment!" -

I agree with this, but still think that the general concept of DYT is a great idea because it would help you create a capsule wardrobe that would be easier for traveling and dressing. More things would GO TOGETHER - if you follow one of the "types" - rather than doing your own approach.

  8. Oh Ladee!

You are so clever and smart, invent your own system of types. That would be very Type 3 of you and you would out type CT out of her own type!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I had a similar experience; while I had paid for all the 4 types and the videos, resources, etc, one day I logged into my member site, and it was ALL gone. I mean, ALL. Evidently I had told one of my facebook friends that she could log in my site and watch one of the videos on type 2, and I guess someones reported me! Gestapo, darling, gestapo! Moving on!

  10. Hi
I found DYT on youtube. I have changed course once. I Think their styles are ridiculous, but that is ME, I know that. I cannot relate to it. Carol and Sara Tuttle the same type? That is ridiculous, too. She says it is a movement. Why is it then called Type? They say it is not a colour program, no but it is very very very strict to colours. The methods she uses is judgmental and she values the types different and the rules within this cult (sorry) is these rational rules that eats themselfes into the mind and then you cannot get rid of them. If you say something against, you are hated, they have one leader, etc etc. People fall for it because it somehow has something of truth in it and is a bit of what people need 2014. I mean, if you can look at videos for fun and order some clothes its ok...forget about that you are one of these types and stop being confused. You are not! You are you and nobody can take that away from you ever.

  11. I have heard that people get kicked out of DYT for wearing black shoes if they are not a type 4. So what if your beauty 6 th sense feels it is right to wear touches of black? Seems crazy to me, that and other reasons are why I will never buy her system. Anyone can figure it out themselves with a little practice.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agreed. People should wear what they want!

      Delete
    2. People can where what they want. Kicked out for wearing black? I've never seen that. I've never heard that in the unofficial groups, and Carol herself has said she's not the clothing police. I don't understand this idea, either, that it's restrictive. If you understand the program, you know that everyone has a primary, a secondary, a tertiary, and a quaternary. Everyone is a combo of all four types. You lead with one energy and then to a lesser extent with a secondary, while the third and fourth play a part but not much. This actually opens up a whole universe to people who have been limited by the world's idea of womanhood. I mean, if I can look at my daughter and see those exotic Type 3 features and her movement in the world fits the description of a Type 3 so perfectly, I don't see how anyone can actually call it fake, bogus, crazy, etc. And really, to call it a cult? I don't ascribe to everything this program has become, but it's a far cry from a cult (my father was in one, I was hurt by them while he was in it, and I've studied them pretty extensively). You have to take what everyone says with a grain of salt, even me. Maybe some people really had these experiences they talk about and maybe some had an experience that they interpreted a certain way even though it wasn't really that way. I, myself, have had a post deleted and got called out by Carol for profiling (the lady had already profiled her daughter, so I thought I was just being supportive). I was angry, and I could have ditched her whole system because of this, but I'm not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I think there are some things that have gone too far. I think in some of the forums, the moderators are a bit too restrictive. But there might be reasons behind this that we don't know. It's really easy to criticize people when they aren't around to defend themselves.

    3. Sorry. People can wear what they want. That's where my T1 comes in, though I don't usually make easy spelling mistakes like that. I post too soon and then need to edit, but I can't edit here.

  13. Ladee, if DYT had a lick of sense they would have looked at all you've done to promote their business and offered to pay you to officially become a part of their team. Or, at the very least, thanked you! I will work on forgiving since you have done that, but hearing how they treated you makes me very angry.

  15. I feel so sorry for you to have to go through that. I have been so frustrated trying to fit one type that I have been thinking of saying "enough already!!" and just wearing what I like. I bought all four courses and a second set of the "new" cards. It's hard to remember that the "rules" are for our own betterment. I'm over a year and a grand in and it is becoming tiresome some days. Best to you.

  16. Just reading this now, Flame; I to appreciate the system, but 'organizations' can so quickly become dogmatic and 'selfish' -- not so much an individual person's fault, but a kind of default of ... systemization. I feel for you in these many instances, because they do sting, and it seems petty - as your intention has always been to encourage others TO the system, not detract from it. As a Type 3 -- we aren't PERFECT. LOL (Leave that to the Type 4's who develop and enforce the Terms of Use! ;-)

  17. Love you! You are an inspiration! I am sorry that the world has come to so much fear of "sharing ideas" and a need to have "ownership" of word combinations. In college they make you take a class before starting to "learn' all about intellectual property and try and SCARE you to death of using someone else's printed words. Pretty soon we will run out of word combo's someone else has used and we will all be in trouble, that said, you can give your book a title someone has used. Go figure!

  20. I have followed Carol Tuttle and enjoyed her program but find it very culty just like Mormonism. I feel some people need to be told how to think and feel and that is very much how Utah is. I take the good out of it and leave the rest but I am certainly not buying anything from her unless it is used and at a nominal price. I find Carol Tuttle very jarring and dictatorial and God forbid you make a comment that does not agree with them. About half of the makeovers are ridiculous and some are amazing. Sarah and her sister in law are lovely young women but Carol is starting to look like a waxwork because of what she is doing to her face. I would be very careful as I have seen carol mistype several women and that costs money that some people cannot afford to waste.

    2. The program is truly lifechanging. It really helps you understand people. I would not have listened to anyone threatening me. You can write and post whatever you like! The mormonism is a cult. The "healing chakras" and all she teaches are pure evil. I guess it's a good with some very bad. Take what you want and leave the rest. I'm a type 4/1. When I go into my closet now I have nothing that's not in my type. It makes my life amazingly easier! It's so important to feel good in your skin and in your look. DYT teaches this and it's spot on. Embrace who you are, thank God for Carol and pray she stops the cult part of her teachings.

  21. Ladee, thanks much for sharing your experience. I've followed DYT for 4 years now and found it helped me develop a style that I felt comfortable with. From time to time, however, the practical application seemed rather "cookie-cutter" and the theory sprouted puzzling anomalies. My main complaint centered around the Type 2 Expression. Carol and her Gang seemed to idealize and over-feminize Type 2 women as super gentle, sweet, kind, loving and without a mean bone in the their body. She has literally said that Type 2s are saints (we're talking about roughly 2 billion people). As a Type 2, I found that ridiculous.
One day, feeling increasingly ornery about yet another video on their Lifestyle website that presented pale, over-delicate Type 2 colors in contrast to the fun, vibrant clothes worn by the other types, I posted a comment, asking if the Team could bring in more of the brighter VERSIONS of Type 2 colors. I immediately got slammed by Carol, who proceeded to jackhammer me over 3 days and several long posts on the part of both of us. She said that I was being critical and mean and couldn't be a Type 2. Based upon my critical comments and preference for brighter colors, I was obviously a Type 4, per Carol.

This position contradicted her teaching. She has made the point numerous times that you can't necessarily type someone from their behavior, as personality and upbringing can color how they act, but rather, the most accurate typing is done by looking at facial features and other physical characteristics. Yet, she had no idea what I looked like and only responded based on one short paragraph from me.

I attempted to explain, but it was useless. In fact, the more I posted, the worse it got. I felt like a rock being jackhammered. Her energy is intense. Apparently, I had hurt her daughter's feelings, so I was probably dealing with an angry Mama Bear. Plus, I wasn't aware of this, but the Tuttle/Brown family had gone through a death that past week, and I'm betting that Carol was taking out some of her grief on me. I ended up apologizing and got off the forum. Feeling emotionally battered and not heard, I then unsubscribed and deleted all my credit card info from their store. DYT lost a good customer and a loyal follower.

All Carol had to do was respond to my initial post with a very quick and short statement: "Please do not criticize the DYT presenters. Praise, sharing of your own experience, and respectful questions are welcome. For any other comments, please see our experienced support team." Instead, she came on like a hurricane and pushed and pushed and pushed. And so I swam away.

    4. I'm sorry for your experience. I had a horrible experience with her during a video interview for a position with their company. She berated me and verbally abused me, and that is the short story. I was absolutely shattered (at the time), because I had held her in high regard. After I worked through the after-affects of the abuse, I was absolutely thankful that I'd been spared working for that woman. It was one of the worst inter-personal experiences of my life.

    5. That's so weird. What is so critical about asking to see brighter type 2 colors? How is that putting anyone down? It seems like a huge overreaction. The more I read about CT the more I think she has many issues and insecurities she needs to deal with. Maybe she needs to use more of her Healing Center herself.

      Delete
    6. Have you discovered your type? Maybe you're a 2/4 or 4/2? I used my seasonal color palette analysis which is Bright Winter to help me fine tune and see myself as a 4/1. I really like the 4/1 color analysis. It's more precise than Bright Winter. Carol's program is really perfection. The colors on you will always look perfect.

  23. I have been following DYT for 7 years, and have been getting more and more turned off to Ms. Tuttle, who has evolved into an obnoxious, imperious bully, who requires cultish devotion to her authority and accepts no questioning or criticism. Other commenters here have pointed out the truth that she "borrowed" the whole DYT system to begin with, without giving credit, claiming she discovered it through divine inspiration (a typical ploy of all cult leaders). Because she is gifted with business savvy, she has brokered this into a highly successful cash cow. What was once supposed to be free-for-life access to everything DYT to those of us who bought into it at the beginning, and "knew her when", became more and more eroded as time went on and her operation became increasingly more "professional" and sophisticated. Now you have to join "Lifestyle" to get any significant "support" or important DYT content--everything we all used to have access to in past had been taken down. Recently, CT has announced that all the DYT courses are now free, because of her magnanimous desire to make this critical information available to everyone. Of course, this only amounts to an effective "teaser", designed to pull you in and cause you to feel you must depend on her and her DYT organization to truly understand yourself and be able to fully "live your truth." Spiritually speaking, there is also nothing truly transformative about this--feeling "free" to be "who you are" becomes nothing more than an excuse to give play to not only your good points, but your shadow side as well. Witness the runaway train CT herself has become.
The last straw for me came recently when she cruelly browbeat a clearly emotionally fragile, deeply hurting woman during a live skype broadcast when the woman did not fall into line when Carole told her she had mistyped herself. It was horrifying to see CT so caught up in her ego and need to be "the authority" that she was oblivious to what she was doing to this poor soul.

    1. That video is the worst. It's very uncomfortable to watch. I first attributed it to the woman being close-minded. I later realized that she wasn't putting up blocks, she was holding herself back from her true feelings. Ultimately, CT was correct (I believe) in her assessment of the woman as a T3. If the poor thing had been living her truth she might've given CT a piece of her mind. Imagine that exciting live stream!

      Delete
    2. Yeah, the fact that she says she got this system from divine inspiration bothers me. If you do your research you'll see she basically copied it from someone else and just put a new spin on it. I was also upset when she took down all her old videos. In the end it is a business.

      Delete
    3. I totally agree with the part about how they made her seem so wonderful for making DYT free. It was like she was doing such great things for society. In actuality though, it's not really free. It's just now instead of buying the course and getting admission into the DYT FB page, free access to Club Nights, and the style guides now you have to buy admission to the FB page and style guides for 99 dollars (which is the price of the course when it was on sale). So it's just a trade...not really free! Plus there are no more club nights so now you have to pay the monthly fee to see Lifestyle. She was made to seem so great too when prior to making it free she started to give you all four courses for the price of one so, or so they said, everyone's daughters could benefit. But she made a lot of money of that. Everyone who already had DYT now had the change to spend 40 dollars a piece and buy all four style guides. Every "great" thing she supposedly does for society just seems to be a way to put more cash in her pocket.

  24. I feel Carol Tuttle is a ruthless woman with a knee jerk reaction towards anyone who does not agree with her. I was cut off when I commented on the low wages offered on their job openings which I felt was incongruous with her mantra that she helps women be free to be themselves. She was offering $9 an hour that would involve heavy lifting without insurance. God forbid you injure your back! Carol Tuttle is a charlatan who takes advantage of women who need to be told who to be just like are advised by the Mormon church. God forbid that she would offer employees an actual living wage but of course it is more important that she drive a Porsche while her people live on barely over minimum wage. She is an unsavory woman who is aided and abetted by her family and hangers on.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Knee jerk reaction - yes. I would characterize it as extreme defensiveness that manifests as a pit-bull attack dog mentality. She needs to do some serious inner work and failing that, at least learn to be more professional. I see more comments being posted about her in the past 6 months. It's only going to get worse unless she gets control of herself or her family realizes that they've got to put someone else on the front lines to interact with the public.

  25. The part I don't understand with DYT is they emphasize following your "beauty sixth sense," but if what you like doesn't match your "type" then it's either wrong and you should better follow their rules or you are one of the other types.

I successfully typed myself as a 2 and bought clothing, makeup, and jewelry from her for 4 years, participated in on-line posts, and paid for her Lifestyle for a year. I never doubted my Type using her system and genuinely liked the T2 styles, with a few exceptions. One day she didn't like something I said and typed me as a 4 on the basis of one comment. Carol has SAID in the past that you can't accurately type based on personality or expression, but on face and body structure. She never bothered to look at a photo of me or even Skype me. Nope, just a snap judgment based on one chat. She was insistent, imperious, and rude and wouldn't back down. I unsubscribed.

    2. They say you’ll figure out your secondary by your style preferences. Carol confirmed a secondary by the sweatshirt the lady was wearing in a video call. But that sweatshirt may not be more preferential, it may have been an item purchased due to time constraints or availability finding clothing in the dominant type color. That would be called an extraneous correlation and not a way to type someone, unless you’re CT because it’s her system and only she can confirm someone. They say your secondary is not as important in some content but in other content they say this is why knowing your secondary is so important to creating a unique personal style. A majority of the people will not find their own special personal style because they don’t know their secondary or they get it wrong and they do not know that there are things about their bodies that will make certain design lines wrong on them. The wow factor makeovers are not really what most women in the groups are like or seem to even aspire to. From what I saw when I was a member, most women are content in very basic styles that you don’t need this system for. I moved on to a much more inclusive system that is helping me with real meaningful fashion while giving me artistic freedom in my style development. Creating well thought outfits is an art and seems you won’t find much artistic inspiration in DYT.
I think DYT should offer secondary confirmation rather than continuing to spend money on clothes that are still wrong because they do not honor your secondary. It’s false advertisement to say you’ll save money once you know your type. False.

  26. I recently left dyt (left the facebook group and ended my membership). I got sick of the constant micromanaging of the admins on facebook and I was also told off on a couple of occasions when I had commented on something, but said nothing wrong - nothing attacking/putting down/criticising etc. I didn't get a proper answer when I emailed them about it either. I have also had perfectly innocent posts removed by admin (such as one that simply asked if Carol had typed a particular famous person). I find the 4 types to be very restrictive. Carol has confirmed my type as a t3 and she also confimed my secondary. I don't really like any of the styles that much - I feel like I can't have fun anymore and I should be stomping around dressing like a man with spiky hair (which doesn't appeal to me at all) and if I don't I'm not "living my truth". I'm not a Utah mormon mom so I just can't relate to most of the people in the groups and things...a lot of them, especially the t3s, are really unappealing people to me anyway. Shopping isn't fun anymore and I don't think people fit so neatly into these categories. SO I'm sure there intentions are good and they help a lot of women, but I'm done with it all, over it. Thanks for your post.

    1. Good for you Katie. There are elements of this group that are very "culty". They are major control freaks and if you express any sort of descent they censor your posts. Carol is very good at taking people's money then telling them what to do. What sort of business model is that? I kick myself for having gotten involved with this nonsense.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you Katie that people don't necessarily fit into these neat little categories, and I think that is where I went off with Carol. Got sucked into her "expertise", rather than seeing her system as just one model -- taking her ideas as an ultimate authority rather than a suggestion. I've left DYT and continue to use some of the things I've learned, but her rudeness to me at the end left a bad taste in my mouth.

  27. Absolutely Joannafesto, it is definately culty and I'm kicking myself too! I have spent an absolute fortune on buying new clothes and other things to try and be a "proper t3" and I've wasted so much money, it's unbelievable. Got rid of perfectly good clothes which looked fine on me. And Anon, I've done more or less the same thing, taken a couple of things that I learned and just left it at that. I'm so relieved I'm no longer part of it and now I just dress how I see fit. So much less stressful!

  28. Absolutely. There were some Youtube! videos posted rebutting her system and suspiciously they appear to have been taken down this morning. What is up with that? The system doesn't work and Carol Tuttle is a rude, unpleasant, manipulative woman who uses mind control techniques fleece unsuspecting women of their money. They get ripped off and then are made to feel stupid for not understanding this program, or getting sucked into a cult in the first place. I thought I signed up for a fashion seminar kind of thing and instead I got energy healing and all sorts of stuff that has nothing to do with clothing. Carol does not discuss up front what this program is about. It's about New Age/Mormon energy healing. If you are into that and want to join, I could care less. However, this woman misrepresents herself and this program as something other than what it is. If I had any idea of what it was, I would have run before I got involved.

    1. Yes I saw those videos. Watched a couple and was halfway through another when I saw they'd been taken down. I wonder if she got threatened? There are also another couple of videos up by different people critiquing the system which are good. One lady however later apologies to Carol in another video for doubting the system lol. Ridiculous. I don't think it works for most people either. 4 types for everyone on earth is just stupid. I would have run miles too had I known. The whole group/family are pretty uber-religious I know that much. I'm so glad I left, it was starting to get really weird with the post and word policing on facebook.

  29. While I really like her system and it has thought me what would flatter me as a T3, I too agree it is too fixist and I like black, I just do. Also, Carol typed me as a 3 on her page after commenting that I don't know what I am. And I replied with "I really wish I felt like a T3, etc" and then I saw my comment was deleted and I can't comment or like on any of her facebook posts from her page. And just because I said I don't feel much like a T3 even if my facial features are that. Yeah, and now that I read all your comments, I can see how strict and rude they are, especially with colors.

I was wondering, have any of you got the hair consultation with Nicole?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes I have - I specifically asked not to be shown hair examples that are short/shaved/layered etc as I do not like them and will never wear them. Most of the examples I got sent were like this (although not all). Nicole really does seem genuninely lovely, but the tone of the response was somewhat chastising me for not liking what I am "supposed" to like as a "type 3" (although I don't identify as a "type" anything anymore). I've had relevant posts deleted from lifestyle too, even though I've never been critical or nasty or anything. I really resent that just because I'm apparently a "type 3" I am meant to run around with short hair that has half of it shaved off and the other all spiked up - all power to anyone who likes this, I just don't.

    2. I eventually got the consultation, was needing help with my hair. Her suggestions was T3 like, I had similar stuff in mind with what she showed me. But I too felt it was cookie cut T3 styles, with the chunky highlights. She also sent me a picture that looked similar to something I had a couple of years ago in my hair. But yeah, as far as colors, I won't ever give up my black

  30. I had a DYT hair consultation about 3 years ago. Can't remember the stylist; it wasn't Nicole. The example that came back was modeled by Meg Ryan. Not one of her really crazy "chopped by a lawn mower" styles, but I had seen it before and hated it. So I paid $40 or whatever to get this terrible hair style suggestion. Didn't get the cut, obviously. Discovered the Deva Curly Girl system, found a stylist locally that knew how to cut curly hair properly and am happy with my hair now. It seems like some of the styles that DYT staff puts together miss the mark because they are based on principles of what a certain Type should be doing, rather than following long-accepted, tried-and-true principles of beauty (one of which is proportion.) Each of the DYT Types can express their own unique beauty, but it's not reached by throwing together a hairstyle/outfit based upon a bunch of rules for that Type and calling it a day.

  31. I've always thought she behaved in a masculine way.I could care less if she is gay or not, but I've had the same thoughts. She disappeared for a couple months awhile back and came back looking unusually refreshed, if you catch my drift. I could also care less whether or not someone gets cosmetic surgery done, but misleading people into thinking it's something else to sell your program is quite dishonest. She bullies so many of her followers.

  32. Thanks everyone for the comments. I read them all, and today I'm setting down DYT after some months. I never much enjoyed wearing clothes because 90% of my wardrobe are things other people have given me and thus aren't "my style". I typed myself as a Type 1. I bought some fun type 1 clothes and I love them. While out shopping for more type 1 clothes, I felt very restricted that I couldn't buy the beautiful soft "type 2" clothes, or that I could no longer wear the type of plaid I love because it's "type 3". DYT gave me some much needed insight but it is a relief to set it all down and walk away.

  33. I just left DYT for good and reading all these comments confirms what I have seen. It is a cult and Carol T thinks she is some kind of all knowing Guru (or wants others to believe it). She typed me as a T1 and I am so not a T1. I questioned and of course I am not allowed to do that. Well, what I learned is that I will never ever again give anyone the power to tell me who I am.

  35. Glad I'm not the only one. I had the nerve to suggest that the universe would not strike you down if you wore a non-T3 pair of shoes to someone who was having a melt down about it. I got banned from the Facebook page even though they couldn't tell me what of their many rules I had violated. I learned a lot from DYT and I'm really happy with my way of dressing and make up now, but the DYT organization strikes me as disturbingly cult-like. I don't think Carol Tuttle is the Second Coming. In fact I find some of her pronouncements RIDICULOUS.

  36. I am normally a very sceptical person. I have always questioned everyones motives , agendas etc. I found DYT 7 years ago and when I first started studying the program, I found a lot of the “energy profiling” to be right on in regard to my life. I knew right away I was T3 and suddenly felt justified that I was always considered too much, bossy, forward, etc. I was a T3! Not that I was using that as excuse, but it certainly explained my energy.
As I continued on in the program, there were definitely aspects of it that I questioned. I could never look at Carol as a “guru” and her temperament turned me off a bit and as time went by, a lot! The one thing that I’ve never been good at is people telling me what I feel, who I am and what to do! The easiest way to get me to do something is to tell me that I can’t.
The last 3-4 years I have backed away from the whole thing except for a small private group of about 20 T3s that I love having a connection to (we’ve all become good friends), but I still mostly wear T3 clothing, with small exceptions.
I now am completely turned off with Carol and her co-hurts and realize they are really there for the money and nothing else.

  37. Thank you for this. I like the system but have interactions with CT that revealed that she’s a very narcissistic person IMO. If you look at Michelle Lee Nieves YouTube channel, specifically on covert narcissism and Meredith Miller’s channel Inner Integration and the spiritual narcissist, it’ll connect many dots.

It has flaws but there's genius there, both in the presentation and the marketing. People can be so complicated. CT is not the only highly talented person who is personally flawed and broken.

  39. Still going on! I joined a couple years ago, "type 1" basically I like fun clothes and colors, whatever...a couple of things really turned me off. on the facebook page, someone asked (one of her people I figured out) asked if type ones could wear black...it was like a trick question or something...I said, sure, I am a type 1 and I still wear black, but did I get reemed a new one. Carol herslef "THIS IS NOT WHAT I TEACH"...well excusseee me. Then one of her "consultants" offered to basically save me from my mistakes...egad. Creepy. Then there is the euro centric way she seems to do "facial profiling" and basically almost all white people on her site, videos, etc. He her wear new clothes and all your past pain with poof disappear!! So I left but not before I told them why...now I am on a mission. I actually almost used the word CULTLIKE, but tamed it to No One can tell another how to dress...Whats funny is she shows the cards in her "free videos" so all you have to do is stop the video and take the picture...anyway been there done that!Oh and I found this blog as I was interested if others had the same reactions I did, as seem do many, so yes, I am not nuts!!

    1. Hi All! I’m the #23 original poster from July 29, 2017. I stopped back here after all this time and read all the new comments plus the responses to my original post. I can’t seem to activate the “REPLY” in my original comment thread, so I’m posting down here.

I’ve had time to let this whole matter sit and reflect upon what happened, but in this post I’m replying to K’s comment from September 23, 2020, located underneath mine.

Hi K! To answer your question - yes, I certainly did type myself years ago in 2013 using Carol Tuttle’s Energy Profiling system and I was definitely a dominant Type 2: my face has a softened feel with blended features, and teardrop and oval shapes. My body is the classic type 2 pear shape. In the original test I took I resonated with oval, blended, s-curve shapes and other visuals like flowers and waves. The type 2 colors look and feel best on me. I look silly in type 1 colors and styles, rough and muddy in type 3 colors and styles, and old and overwhelmed in Type 4 colors and styles.

So, no, I am not a 2/4 or a 4/2. My secondary is a 3, which comes out in a slight redness in the central part of my face and upward slanting eyebrows, and an occasional tendency to get combative and ornery if I’m not being heard. Type 4 is my tertiary energy.

Carol Tuttle went way off the mark when she tried to prove I was a Type 4. I never said I wanted to wear Type 4 bright colors. Those colors overwhelm me. I look like a kid in a clown suit. I said I wanted some brighter VERSIONS of the type 2 colors.

I offered as examples some brighter type 2 items that were already in the Type 2 store (at that time they still carried clothing.) So what was the problem? I still have the thread of that conversation—I honestly can’t see what I said that was offensive or incorrect!

Well, as I explained above, the real problem was the grief and emotional turmoil that was sweeping through Carol’s extended family. Her daughter Anne’s father in law had just died (a fact I later learned) Anne was apparently upset by my comments . . . but I believe she was just very heartbroken — which is completely understandable. Dressing Your Truth is a family run business and Anne’s in-laws were involved in it. My comment became a focus of Anne’s grief and Carol’s mother-bear anger. This is not unusual - grief can get refocused onto something completely unrelated.

Unfortunately, Carol became like a dog with a bone, obsessive and unrelenting, violating her own rules that you can’t type someone unless you see them (she had no photo of me). In hindsight, my mistake was trying to argue with her. I didn’t need to prove anything to her or anyone else. I should have just apologized for any inadvertent hurt my original comment generated, gotten off the forum, and unsubscribed, in that order.

Despite what happened, I respect Carol for what she has created and appreciate what I learned. Energy profiling is only 1 method of sorting out who we are, but it has validity and I still use many of the principles. However, I will not go near Carol anymore or buy her wares. When you are in business and dealing with the public you DO NOT emotionally jackhammer someone with your rage and grief and attempt to publicly shame them. Carol crossed a boundary with me that necessitated permanently removing myself from her and her organization. My decision was not about a disagreement in profiling - it was about ABUSE.

To her credit, Carol (or someone in her group) wisely removed that whole thread from the Lifestyle forum. I noticed that the thread was gone from my Discus account sometime in the last year or so. It looks like the original videos by the 4 energy experts may have been separated and repurposed. I think that was a very wise idea.

  41. I got tired of them trying to control what I posted so I left DYT. They're constantly trying to sell you something. Even if it's affordable, I don't want to be redirected to a different group or product to work on my healing. I'm also a T3. I'm grateful for the knowledge, but I'm not going to be controlled, manipulated and mistreated when all I was trying to do was connect with others. At the end of the day DYT is a business and unless you're spending money on all her products she doesn't care what we think or feel.

    1. I'm sorry to hear that, Kriss. I just had a bad experience too. I got kicked out of a type 2 group on facebook for posting a photo introducing myself and saying that I was "cluebombed" as T1 but the clue didn't work for me after switching to that type 1 and wearing the clothes and makeup for three years, so I was back to my original type 2 that harmonized with my natural coloring. What followed that was an experience over email that I can only describe as gaslighting and cyberbullying by her "support angels," under the guise of helping, and admins and members in the comments strongly encouraging me to pay for the "healing center." They also emailed me screenshots of the cluebomb and my original photos I posted a few years ago which sparked the clue from Carol, which I find extremely creepy. I don't think it's ok for some woman I've never met to try and tell me who I am based on one photo taken years ago. The whole experience was really upsetting. I will never go near them again.

    2. I’m very glad I found your comment. CT typed me wrong and I don’t care if she thinks she is always right. She has been wrong before, right? When you put so much energy into an amazing program and then get trampled over by the person who created it telling you that she knows who you are better than you do, how do you recover from that? I’m not sure what I’m saying. But I really hate that she thinks her word is always right. But then tells you you are the only person who can truly know who you are.

      Delete
  42. Anybody know if CT has actually been wrong before even when typing someone’s face!m? Doesn’t she say that 3/2 s and 2/3s are the most difficult to type? Why doesn’t she listen to people when they express themselves to her? She just says, this is your type live it or get out. I can’t stand her anymore. And I’m heart broken because “her” program litterally changed my life for the better and then she ruined it by telling me I typed myself wrong and I need to heal and be who I am. When I already did my healing and felt I found who I am, I was happy with that until she chimed in.

    1. I would trust your instincts and your experience. If the system worked for you--if it transformed your life--then you correctly typed yourself to begin with. Carol Tuttle is a marketing genius and a savvy businesswoman but she isn't infallible with this system and didn't even originally create it AND she allows her own wounds and abusiveness to overrule her sometimes. Trust yourself, trust what you know to be true.

    2. She originally said to not let people tell you who you are, but now she is typing people. I think it's very odd and cult leader behavior.

    3. I picked up this system a long time ago but never really adhered to it. I recently came back to it because I feel that there’s “something” to it. But I am finding an aversion to Carol (tough for me because my spiritual teacher typed me as a 3/4- same as Carol) and the vibe in the Facebook group is weird to me. I’m in the Type 3 group. I feel like there’s a lot of uncertainty. It somewhat seems like the uncertainty is fed or fueled (purposely?) so that people stay dependent on the system or feedback from others. IMO A truly supportive system would help people become confident in themselves to the point where they feel comfortable and confident in navigating and applying the system themselves.

      Delete
    4. CT frequently mistypes, partially because her background is not in the styling. Even some of the “experts” are mistyped. Now the premise of the system is based on facial shapes, allegedly not colours although it does prescribe tonal color direction, to get the best style for a person the two should remain separate. A good example is T4 K not actually a T4, in color or shape, she is undoubtedly beautiful but her face shape is T2 as is her body shape. Her face is neither a perfect oval or square which would require the thirds of the face to be exact but they are not, she has asymmetry in a couple of areas. She has a little type 1 too and three in the texture of her skin. Her coloring is muted, medium deep, with a hint of warmth. The colors and contrast of T4 are too strong for her when she has no make up. The right colors still look great without makeup. Now in essences she is natural, gamine with a little romantic and classic which is why the cute preppy jeans, shirt and jumper combos look great on her. A T4/1 would be a dramatic-classic-ingenue, a T4/2 dramatic-classic-romantic, T4/3 dramatic-classic-natural possibly with or without gamine. A T3/1 would be natural-gamine, T3/2 Natural-Romantic

  45. Cults tend to have a dominant leader who is accepted as the final authority, plus they tend to focus on their religion/system/method/way as the ONLY factor to consider. DYT presents their energy typing as the only determinant of how you move through life, react to others, and plan and carry out your day and what colors and styles you should wear. Many biological and environmental factors shape who we are. And, contrary to DYT teachings, underlying skin tone DOES affect what colors look good on you. We are complex creatures, not easily broken down into a one system fits all philosophy. I did find many of the descriptions of my energy type true, much more so than the other 3 types, but DYT did not explain other characteristics. Another characteristic of cults is slavish obedience to the system and shaming/attacking those who present alternative viewpoints or don't fit the mold to a T. it was the latter that drove me away.

    1. Exactly. I had many of these same experiences that people are describing with Carol and witnessed her being pretty blunt and harsh with someone who was VERY clearly emotionally and psychologically fragile, but what I want to comment on is the idiocy of the program itself when you really think about it. In her original book about it, "It's Just My Nature", I recall her saying that so many things and factors contribute to a person's type...so that's literally like saying that God or a governing law of nature made it so that every single person's personality can always be discerned/diagnosed by their face and skin tone alone? That doesn't make any sense. That ignores all the other physical expressions she mentions- body shape, walk, doodles, etc. So why did God or nature pick the face and skin tone alone to decide that you have one dominant type of 4? There are so many assumptions about our creation and laws of nature and laws of God even in that statement alone. Let's say you believe that though...you also believe that someone's skin tone ALWAYS matches their "type"? What if you are 90% one type and then your skin tone happens to be of the 10% of a different "type"? See- it doesn't make logical sense. It also does not make sense that Carol has a program that claims to not tell people who they are- that you will have an inner knowing about it....but then she goes ahead and tells people who they are all the time...and that their own interpretation is wrong. What does make logical sense is that Carol decided that the face and skin tone would be the sole diagnostic tool and that she found a system, re-branded it, and then literally tells people she is the authority on their personality even though she tells people they are now free of all that. Humans are complex; Family upbringing, family birth order, abuse/trauma, family beliefs, life events, culture beliefs, (even hormones!) all shape who we are. I think she would probably type me as 4 or 3 from all of this due to my contradictory ways, but after I told her I thought I was a different type than what I was typed (paid for it and everything), she said she knew "100%" that I was type 1. Whatever. No more types for me.

      Delete
  46. I was typed as a 1 and so many aspects of it do seem to meld with my personality but certainly not all of it. Ultimately, I have taken something from the system but there will be somethings I leave. I like my style words, and having a capsule wardrobe with a semi consistent palette but I look lovely in light grey and sometimes even black , and sometimes I feel more polished and pulled together in t4 tints and patterns and that is what I want to feel that day. I think I like expressing some of the secondary energies depending on how I feel.

  47. I am so glad I stumbled across your blog! I am so sorry for your horrible experience. Mine wasn't much better. I followed Carol Tuttle and Dressing Your Truth since 2014. It was the first "color system" I learned about, however, recently I started learning about other systems that have been around much longer than Dressing Your Truth. Carol Tuttle totally ripped off a handful of different systems and made them into her own!! Her system is highly inaccurate. She maintains that you cannot do the one thing all the other more established and accurate systems do: put the colors up to your face to determine your type. Carol Tuttle uses pseudo science, basically phrenology and dime store folk psychology to "type" people, except she's shady about it: she has YOU type yourself. This is where she escapes responsibility and accountability. I agree with the other comments that it is super culty. I cannot tell you how many times I was demeaned online in her official Facebook group for my type for minuscule reasons or infractions similar to what others have stated in this thread. She and her "team" are bullies. It is ironic she so tightly guards her intellectual property when it is very evident she ripped off so many previous systems that have been around a lot longer. Just do some reading on color psychology and color typing and you will see. I would advise women to steer clear of Carol Tuttle and Dressing Your Truth. It is very inaccurate and very damaging.

  48. I want to share something I figured out about this system here and it may help others. She is only typing our movement and nervous system and nothing else and yes, the colors do not work. She typed me as a type 1 and I am a dark autumn. So, for example Bernie Sanders is an INFJ and considered a type 1, Brene Brown is an INFJ and considered a type 3 and Marianne Williamson is an INFJ and a type 4. It's really simple and you will see by watching their movement. But they are all very deep and smart people. Took me a little over a year to figure this out but yes trying to get the word out.
